Custom Domain Errors

When adding your custom domain in Thinkific, you might see an error message. This article will cover common errors and how to troubleshoot!

Requirements When Adding Your Custom Domain

When adding your custom domain in Thinkific, please make sure of the following:

  • Make sure you have already created a CNAME record in your domain host
  • Your domain should be formatted subdomain.domain.com (ex. www.yoursite.com)
  • Do not include http:// or https:// in the custom domain field
  • Make sure your custom domain includes a subdomain. A subdomain precedes your main domain name. For example in www.yoursite.com, www is the subdomain
  • Your URL must contain only letters, numbers and dashes

  • It must contain at least 3 characters and at most 61 characters

Error Messages

Host has already been taken

  • This means the custom URL is already used on another Thinkific site

Host is invalid

  • This means the subdomain may be in the incorrect format
  • Your subdomain must be more than 2 characters and make sure to double check all of the above requirements

URL format is not valid

  • Make sure that your domain is formatted subdomain.domain.com (ex. www.yoursite.com)
  • Do not include http:// or https:// in the custom domain field
  • Try typing in your domain instead of copy/pasting as sometimes this can cause unintentional extra characters

Host does not have valid CNAME record

  • Your CNAME record may have been set up incorrectly
  • See HERE for testing your CNAME record
